Abstract
To advance comparative and longitudinal research on culture it is important to develop a better understanding of the way in which cultural realms are organized. One possibility is by means of an institutional framework — supply, demand, and financial support. Another possibility is in terms of genre, such as dance, theater, the visual arts, and music. These alternatives are examined empirically in this paper. Another issue addressed pertains to the measurement of indicators of both institutional dimensions and of genre. Using multiple sources of data for the 125 largest U.S. metropolitan places, this paper reports the results of a structural equation model using exogenous indicators of urban scale and median education and multiple measures of cultural supply, demand, and funding that correspond to each of the major genres of traditional culture.
